Feed
Pig feeds in the Netherlands consist mainly of grain, grain products, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and wet and dry by-products of the food industry. They are supplied by specialist feed suppliers recognised for Good Manufacturing Practice Plus (GMP-Plus). The GMP-Plus code is based on ISO-9001 and meets the requirements of the HACCP quality system.
Composition of pig feed
Most pigs are given food in the form of dry compressed pellets. They also have free access to water. Some pigs are given wet feed. This contains moist by-products of the food industry. Examples of by-products are wheat starch, potato peelings from the potato industry, whey from the dairy industry and beer by-products from breweries.
Veterinary medicines in feed
All antibiotics have been banned from animal feeds since 1 July 1999. Special notification is needed and a veterinary certificate is compulsory to include veterinary medicines in feed
