Environmental care
VION Fresh Meat West considers environmental management of paramount importance. Optimization of transport movements, use of recyclable industrial packaging and various energy-saving projects are examples of our active environmental policy. Our project-based approach to environmental management allows us to combine all parties’ interests as effectively as possible: Those of our employees, our workplace, the environment and our business.Farmingnet
Our unique information system, Farmingnet, provides pig farmers with varied data about the animals they supplied. Such as the contents of the animals’ stomach and gut. This allows pig farmers to see, for example, that it is better to send animals for slaughter with an empty stomach. Not only is an empty stomach more comfortable for the animal, it is also important for better hygiene and meat quality. And on top of that, it means less pollution. After all, the abattoir will have less bowel contents to dispose of.
Energy
Internal monitoring systems contribute to further optimization of energy use at our production sites. This for example has resulted in a 20% reduction in gas consumption at VION Fresh Meat in Meppel.
Driving back water consumption is one of the environmental spearheads at VION Fresh Meat West. And with success. Through active policy, smart thinking and an awareness-raising process among staff, consumption of hot and cold water at VION Fresh Meat in Boxtel and VION Fresh Meat in Druten has been reduced by 40 to 60%. By-products from sewage treatment plants are bio-degradable and used centrally for generation of green electricity in biogas installations.
Centralised coordination
Environmental projects at VION Food Group in the Netherlands are coordinated from a central control centre. This allows us to make the best possible use of all available knowledge and synergy. Together with external parties, we are continuously looking to implement the best possible solutions. We closely monitor legislation, and keep up with state-of-the-art technology from a centralised department. This way, we can quickly embrace new opportunities.
Together with our subsidiary Sobel from the VION Ingredients division, we are always looking to ensure the best handling of slaughter by-products within VION Food Group. Centralised coordination of these flows ensures minimum transport movements and optimal pre-processing at our sites.
'One-stop delivery’
Refrigerated lorries set off from the Distrifresh distribution centres in Boxtel and IJsselmuiden every day to transport supplies to clients across the Netherlands. Not only pork and beef, chicken, minced meat and convenience products are delivered, but so are fish, cheese, salads, meat products and other fresh products that require cold storage. Combined refrigerated transport of meat and fresh products enables one-stop delivery of all these items. This provides logistical and financial advantages for the shop. Costs per display container are less, and the shopkeeper often has to unload less during the day. This saves labour costs for goods receipt. Moreover, one single delivery means less environmental damage. Provisioning is improved by the use of fewer lorries, which also leads to reduced noise pollution in shopping centres and town centres.
VION Convenience production sites are generally situated near logistic hotspots. This cuts the time products spend in transit, and secures their freshness and quality.
