Piglets
In broad terms there are three types of pig companies. Breeding units (reproduction units), pig farms and breeding farms.
The reproduction units specialise in breeding piglets. After around ten weeks their piglets go to a pig farmer.
The piglets are reared by the pig farmer. He is responsible for them and ensures they are properly reared. When the pigs are at the ideal weight, they are transported to the abattoir.
Stockbreeding and rearing of the pigs takes place in one operational location at a breeding farm.
VION Farming mediates between the stockbreeder and the pig farmer. The field service workers know precisely for which piglets the pig farmers have a requirement. Consequently they can mediate between the stockbreeder and the pig farmer. A strong and uniform couple of piglets is the basic requirement and starting point for optimal results for pig farming.
Approximately 20 million piglets a year are born in the Netherlands. They do not all remain in the Netherlands. A proportion are sold abroad after mediation by VION Farming.
